NCOA, Yusipang is happy to introduce two varieties of coloured cauliflower: (1) Purple coloured cauliflower with the introductory name โValentenaโ and (2) Orange coloured cauliflower with the introductory name โCarotenaโ. The varieties were evaluated successfully at NCOA, Yusipang (2,650 masl) with the yield of 6.8 MT/acre and 6.2 MT/acre for Valentena and Carotena respectively. These hybrid seeds were introduced from Syngenta, India and the seeds were sown during the month of March and harvested in June.
The Variety Release Committee endorsed the release of the varieties on 16 June 2023 and the seeds will soon be available in the market for production in Bhutan for farmers to produce colourful vegetables.
Valentena is considered to be rich in Anthocyanins (antioxidants). It is also considered good for heart health and reduction of inflammation. Carotena is rich in beta carotene.
Similarly, a coloured cabbage variety โRed Jewelโ is also under evaluation with first bountiful harvest. Seeds were sown during the month of March. The coloured cabbage beside its rich contents of Anthocyanins it is considered to contain Vitamin C, vitamin K, Vitamin A, Folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Zinc, Riboflavin and Thiamin. It helps improve household nutrition, increase crop and Food diversity.
These versatile vegetables can be added to soups, stews and salads. Itโs delicious raw, steamed, sautรฉed, and fermented and served as a side dish. The idea of brightness, attractiveness, and visual appeal associated with these vibrant-coloured vegetables and an eye-catching allure can help capture consumer attention.
