The field crops program of National center for Organic Agriculture in collaboration with National Post Harvest Center conducted a day long training on Quinoa product development for the homestayโs owner of Haa Dzongkhag, particularly the owners from different FSAPP gewogs under Haa Dzongkhag on 17/6/2022.
The objective of the training was to diversify the existing menu for their guest rather than constantly sticking to few lists of menu and also to provide broader knowledge on value addition for better livelihood. It was also aimed to promote the consumption of Quinoa as nutrient rich food.
Quinoa is a new Andean food introduced to Bhutan in 2015 from Peru by the Department of Agriculture. The crop was introduced mainly to diversify our existing traditional cropping system, to enhance food and nutritional security of Bhutanese people and to grow as a climate resilient crop. The crop was successfully introduced in the country however, some limitation still prevail with the farmers of which value addition and its utilization is among one.
Hands on training on quinoa Cookies, quinoa balls and quinoa cupcake were provided along with detail theoretical procedure. Apart from its procedure and practical demonstration, the safety measure while preparing (GAP), packaging, labelling process and its importance were also provided. Along with above mentioned products, Quinoa Desi and Thub (porridge) was also demonstrated to the participants.
The program on quinoa product development was graced by Chief Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer, Haa along with accompanying official from Dzongkhag Livestock and Thai volunteer Ms. Supatra Saenram. a total of 15 homestay owner (Female: 13, Male: 2) actively took part in the training which comprise of theory and practical activities.
The training was conducted with support from Food Security and Agriculture Productively Project (FSAPP). The Center is looking forward to conduct similar training to the farmers in future.
