Empowering Women Farmers for Conservation and Income Generation

Propagation of Tupistra nutans and Cymbidium hookerianum

The NWFPs are rapidly declining in wild due to rampant collection not only by the local communities but also by people outside community due to high price fetched by the NWFPs for cuisine delicacy and aesthetic purposes. With this, UWICER-Darla identified two women groups in consultation with Chukha Dzongkang. The Meritsemo group has 3 members and Phasuma group has 4 members. The groups belong to Bongo Gewog under Chhukha Dzongkhag comprising of women belonging to low income group as well as lack of awareness and farm labour shortage problem. The group formation and associated supports to the group are aimed for: i) diversification of income generation source, ii) optimization of land utilization, iii) promotion of climatic adaptive species, iv) women empowerment and knowledge sharing and v) employment generation and vi) conservation of the NWFPs.

Propagation of Cymbidium hookerianum

UWICER-Darla with funding support from Resilient Mountain Solutions (RMS) Initiative has trained the two women groups on propagation and management of Tupistra nutans and Cymbidium spp. The RMS Initiative has also supported the two groups with polyhouses, water tank, polybags, agronets, watering cans and secateurs to encourage them to upscale the propagation. Post training, the groups propagated the NWFPs through division methods and seedlings raised through seeds in their respective polyhouses. The seedlings raised in the polyhouses. will be planted out as intercrops in their field while maintaining mother stock in the nurseries. The propagation of the NWFPs is encouraged due to their multi-benefits and gender friendly nature. This activity is an effort to lessen collection of the species from the wild and to eventually uplift their economic condition through sale of the produces.
